Would you encourage people to ask their partners to get a blood test before marriage?
Yes. As we like to say, “better safe than sorry”. While there is disagreement on the necessity of the blood test when partners are confident in the other’s fidelity, there is no harm that can come from having a blood test done. It is vital to remember that a person can become infected with HIV without ever knowing it. HIV can spread through blood transfusions, medical procedures, intravenous drug use and can even be passed from mother to child through breast milk. In this sense, a blood test before marriage is the only way to ensure that both partners can remain healthy.
